Question by matilda.questions: How to become a Vet Tech?
Hi there.

Trying to find out information on becoming a Vet Technician. I’m attending community college now and taking biology and other courses. Does a vet tech need to go to a specialized teach or? Also, what schooling would a Vet Tech need if they wanted to become a Veterinarian later on?

If you happen to know of any vet tech schools in Dallas, Texas that would be fantastic. Thankfulness.

Start by checking out the community colleges in the area and see if any of them offer the necessary training to become a vet tech. It’s probably an associate’s level degree or certificate program.

The closest American Veterinary Health check Association qualified veterinary technology program near you is Cedar Valley College in Lancaster, TX. It has had an approved veterinary technology program for more than 20 years (I graduated from that program many years ago ;) ) I would vastly recommend that you look at their pre-requisites to ensure that you are taking the courses you need to.
You can find information on the program here:

Once you earn your degree in veterinary technology, you will need to apply to sit for the Veterinary Technician National Exam and the state jurisprudence exam in order to be registered as a veterinary technician with the Texas Veterinary Health check Association.

I would also recommend that you join the Texas Association of Registered Veterinary Technicians. This is the state association for veterinary technicians and other hospital staff. We offer scholarships yearly to our members who are going into their second year of study for a degree in veterinary technology.

To become a veterinarian, you would need to earn a bachelors degree and then go on to 4 years of specialized schooling at a college of veterinary medicine.
