Finishing my Pharmacy Tech course… what to do now?
Question by Carmem: Finishing my Pharmacy Tech course… what to do now?
I live in Florida and I’m nearly done with my Pharmacy Technician course I chose to take from a Pennsylvania college (yes, it is a long distance course). I’ve encountered so much discouragement by the side of the way, went through thick and reckon to end this course (got 3 books left…), but now I’m nearly done. My average is 94 and I didn’t cheat during the whole course. I studied really hard, it wasn’t simple like most people reckon of the long-distance courses. *Yes it is recognized in the state of FL* Now what can I do? I have been looking online on job sites but no one is hiring. Should I visit the local pharmacies (CVS, Walgreens, Publix, etc) with my diploma and transcripts (with I’m done with the course), resume and question for a job there? Would they look amusing at me because I took a long-distance course? — I may possibly never afford a college course, and I have tried grants but I don’t qualify for any (they say I make “too much” money… yeah right). Well, what are your suggestions? thankfulness!
correction: I went through thick and THIN

Try Publix …they are always looking for people… this is a growing company and the benefits are awesome…. every quarter a bonus, stock, X-mas bonus…. a real excellent company to work for…
You should apply at those retail pharmacies IN PERSON and speak to the pharmacy manager over there. Show them that you really want to enter into this career. If you show enthusiasm and drive, they will give you a opportunity! Also look into working at pharmacies in military bases. I work in a hospital and they are quite picky as to who they hire. They require you to have passed your PTCB and have some experience. My tip: I did not want to go the retail send but want to work in a hospital. I volunteered in the inpatient pharmacy for 2 months. I worked my butt off and showed the pharmacy director and the head pharmacy technician that I was serious in this area entering into this field and a hard worker. They hired me immediatley. But, I must warn you that the job is stressful, hardwork and you WILL be on your feet all day. You will place up with a lot of crap from nurses, pharmacists and every one in between (except patients..you seldom have any friend with them) if you work in the hospital setting. DO NOT work as a “floater” or “flexi”. That will NOT benefit you at all since you will not get any kind of benefits. If you want to work in a retail setting, again, the same goes with working in a hospital…..a lot of stress, crap and standing on your feet and customers complaints (i.e. anywhere from indemnity issues to alternative up their meds).
Excellent luck to you!
p.s. If you are going to apply for a job in person (again, do it that way instead of the internet), remember to bring your resume with your references, a copy of your pharmacy technician license and certificate from the PTCB. I used my pharmacy technician instructor as one of my references. It was a coincidence that she happened to be friends with my boss.
