Q&A: ABRSM Grade 8 Certification for College? Help!?
Question by Kay: ABRSM Grade 8 Certification for College? Help!?
Hello! I like piano and do NOT play it for the sake of getting into college, but I have to choose when to take the ABRSM grade 8 exam. I’m asking the following questions so I can pick a testing date.
1. In the eyes of top colleges (i.e. Ivy League and such, not music schools), how much does the ABRSM Grade 8 Certification help with admissions?
2. Would it be a terrible thought to skip grade 6 and 7 and jump straight to the grade 8 exam? (It would give me more time to prepare for grade
I’m not a music-centric person, but I want to take the grade 8 exam as a private achievement, and I’d just like to know how colleges would perceive the certification as opposed to a simple “played piano for ten years.” Thankfulness!

I was wrestling with these questions as well. As far as college admissions, the common application features an art supplement. You may possibly take a video/recording of you playing a piece and turn that in as your art supplement, to show colleges you have cleverness. Taking the grade 8 might not be a terrible thought anyway though, mainly if you can pass it with distinction, but it probably won’t be a huge thing. Skipping grades 6 and 7 wouldn’t be a terrible thought if you are confident that you can do well on the grade 8.
