Can you train a seeing eye dog and live in college dorms? do colleges except it?
Question by animluv: Can you train a seeing eye dog and live in college dorms? do colleges except it?
I want to do the puppy raiser for the seeing eye dogs. Thats when you have a puppy from 8 weeks of age to about a year. You house break and train basic obedience training…..Will colleges allow you to do that if you live on campus? I am going to ask them, but though I would see if anyone knows if it is possible before asking.
Thanks!

i wouldn’t think so, most places won’t allow pets, but it is not a pet so maybe they could make an acception.
Probably not and don’t blame them but asking never hurt anybody.
do you mean “accept” it? and if its for a medical disablitly they have to
In my dorm dogs are not allowed, some colleges may allow it but I don’t think most do. I know people in need of assistance of seeing eye dogs are allowed because we have one in my dorm, but to keep it to just train I don’t think so. Anyway I think seeing eye dogs need more training than house breaking and basic obedience.
You definetely should ask the dorm manager. Some campus apartments allow dogs, you might have to change dorms to get one though.
The college I go to has a special campus where it’s allowed. The dorms on that campus allows service dogs-in-training.
You will have to check with your college, of course.
If you were blind you could have it, but sorry no, no dogs allowed on campus.
It would probably depend on the college, but do you have any idea the work that goes into training those dogs, I am pretty sure you do not have the time and I doubt that the seeing eye foundation would give you one to train, it’s almost a full time job
you would have to ask your collage more than likely they will say no puppies in training do not have the same rights as their certified cousins. good luck I hope they do make an exception. I have been raising puppies for 4 years now with pilot dogs it is so worth the heartache when you get that picture of them with their new blind owner!
Colleges probably have to accept seeing eye dogs - they’re a legal aid for visually-impaired people. One of my best friends in college had a seeing eye dog with him for a while, living in the dorm. It didn’t work out, but only because the dog was out of practice.
IF it is YOUR service dog they have no option but you wouldn’t be training it yourself. It would be trained for you and you would be using it as a service dog. SDs can accompany the person that they are providing the service for anywhere. The college could somehow give you specific housing if the dorms were not conducive to your need but if you use a SD, it gets to go with you. If you mean just to train it, no, they will not normally allow it. You are there to get an education, not train dogs and they are not by law required to accommodate you as they are with regards to a special need and SD.
Any service dog in training or already trained and doing it’s job can go anywhere it wants to. It is against the law to NOT allow service dogs their training and work.
Sure some people will bitch. That’s what people do. About the only place I have never taken a dog in training is a hospital.
All you need do is actually do training if you know how and get the dog a vest that states “service dog”. Be cool about it, low key…..
