Sometimes, because of education and age with maturity. It depends on how the Drill Sergeants/Instructors are. Sometimes they will place a 22 year ancient Specialist with a bachelors degree as a Platoon Guide or they might really house an 18 year ancient E-1 Private to give him/her experience as a leader. When I went through vital, they had these pin on sleeve-like marks akin to what MP’s wore with BDU’s with E-5 sergeant rank for squad leaders and E-6 sergeant rank for the PG.

When you first get to vital you won’t have anything with your name on it…and theres so many people that the TI’s probably won’t remember anything in this area who they read what on. If you don’t tell them, and you don’t let it be known then they won’t have any knowledge of you completing college credits. When I went through the grown-up people were the dorm chiefs…there were numerous people with an AA or some college and they were just your average everyday people. When you’re in vital training if you have a leadership roll you’ll be either a dorm chief, or an constituent leader… Those are pretty much all your leadership posistions (making a total of five of them) Otherwise they may possibly make you a dorm guard monitor…or something to that nature, but it’s not necessarily a ranking posistion. If you want leadership rolls then just be a leader when you get there and you might get one, but be aware that if the flight messes up, it’s place on you! And with some TI’s if the flight messes up terrible, the one in charge gets reclcled. It all depends on each TI though. My private advice is to try not to stick out. You don’t get anything special for being a dorm chief or constituent leader when you leave vital. It’s a pin you’ll wear once you’re place in that posistion (not for having college credits), and once you leave vital you don’t wear it anymore…and when you get to your first duty station what you did when you were in vital doesn’t matter… and those 341′s (you’ll see what they are later) don’t mean anything either! You’re better off being distinguished graduate or honor graduate when you’re in tech teach….that’s a excellent EPR bullet and looks excellent when your supervisor goes over your training records. Otherwise just be any ancient person in vital and do your best and work on gettin honor grad, thats a further ribbon.

Officer path, cadet, first sea tour in khaki, no collar dev. some respect by enlisted (they know they might be working for you).
Enlisted path, Depending on who’s had more schooling or age seniority, you’ll be chosen as RCPO. Recruit Co. Petty Officer. The person responsible when the Comp. Comm. leaves you in charge.( Usually in the sunshine when he/she’s at a meeting).
Officer path, second summer tour, you’re treated like an Ensign and an Officer.
