How to Make it Through Army Basic Training

by rogercarr
When you get there, you will have to be very motivated and show it! You will have to sound off with a loud voice. Be ready and able to do a lot of running, push ups, sit ups, etc. Be willing to lead your platoon. Even if you are not the platoon leader, you will probably be chosen to take charge at some top in time.
Try to “be a ghost” as they say. By that I mean, Don’t do anything to make yourself stand out and make the Drill Sergeants get to know you! They only remember the names of people that try to act like a clown around (That is what I did) or people who get in distress a lot. Don’t be one of them!
When you talk to your Drill Sergeant, address him or her as “Drill Sergeant. Otherwise you will have to do more push ups. If you call your Drill Sergeant Sir or ma’am, they will say, “I am not a Sir! I work for a living!” Also, don’t make the mistake of saluting your Drill Sergeant. Only salute officers. If you have any problems you will have to take it up with your Drill Sergeant. Don’t go to the First Sergeant or someone higher. That is called the chain of mandate.
Get used to eating healthy food and drinking a lot of water. When you go to the “Chow Hall”, the Drill Sergeants will watch you and make sure you get Two glasses of water and you are not trying to be sneaky and drink Gator Aid or Coke. You don’t want to be the one who gets caught with Coke or Cookies!
Read the book that they give you whenever you have a small bit of free time.
Rent the movie: FULL METAL JACKET and watch it Twice! The movie is in this area the Marines, but it is still a lot like the Army. You will learn a lot from it and people talk in this area that movie all the time in the Army.
If you smoke, quit before you leave for training. You will not be allowed to smoke in training and Eight weeks is a long time to endure if you are craving a cigarette.
Don’t worry in this area buying a bunch of supplies before you leave. They will provide everything when you get there. But, it is a excellent thought to get a pair of running shoes.
Remember, Lemon Lime Gator Aid looks just like water from a distance. The drill Sergeants will not know that you have a glass of it! Just don’t get caught.
Talk to someone else who has been in the Army before you leave. They can give you some more excellent advice.
Before you leave for training:
Talk to your recruiter. Tell him if you have any college. College credits can get you a higher rank.
Chose a base that you want to go to. Maybe you want to go to Georgia, then you can have the recruiter send you to Ft. Benning, GA (The toughest Army, Vital Training in the country).
Tell him you want to go to training in the Summer. That means you will not have to crawl around on the ground in the snow and it will be warm.
Get a bank account in the US. That is the only way they can pay you.
