Question by vercingetorix: Navy nuclear/college, officer training and more!…?
Hey I’m thinking of joining the Navy, and I have a few questions. First I’m taking into account the nuclear program and I saw that it said E-3 pay grade right off the bat. So what I’m wonderin is-do i get paid that immediately with boot camp or is there a delay , like so I won’t get it till with a certain teach.
Second question-I saw on the Navy site, that if you’re in college you can become a nuclear training instructor while in college. It said you may possibly get officer training for it and do that, and I was just wondering if you can do STA-21 with the 2 years of nuclear training and then transfer to that, and then count some of your years in nuke training towards your full term-and if you do just go in through college into officer training, how many years are you required to serve? also, if you do STA-21, can you still do sports etc. in college,.Finally, if you join up as a nuke or a further grade, and enter STA-21, can you become a pilot or a further type of officer besidesnuke upon graduation

I questioned your question to the navy guys on navy.com/chat- because I was curious to see what they said in this area the pay factor… - They said:
A: yes you get E-3 pay with bootcamp
B: no you can’t be a nuc instructor while in college
C: yes you may apply for STA 21 while enlisted if you qualify and no you can’t do sports in Sta 21
D: any Officer field you go into you will be required to serve anywhere from 4 to 8 years depending on the field

Excellent Luck! ☺

All sailors enlisting in the nuclear power program are advanced to E-3 right with bootcamp, with back pay for bootcamp. You will be an E-3 from the day you get to bootcamp, but your positional rank and pay will be that of a recruit, hence the back pay with you leave RTC.

The instructors at nuclear power teach and prototype are either nuc NCOs (who have been in the fleet) or commissioned officers (restricted). You would have to have a degree in certain fields before you can be a nuc instructor.
