What do Army 68Ws (Combat Medics) do at AIT if they already have EMT-Basic certification, or get it before BT?
Question by Samian’s Eighteenth Account: What do Army 68Ws (Combat Medics) do at AIT if they already have EMT-Vital certification, or get it before BT?
Suppose I signed up for 68Whiskey, but in the months before I shipped off to Vital Training (boot camp), I went ahead and got EMT-Vital certification at my community college.
Would they force me to retake EMT training and the NREMT-B test, too?
What would they do in such a case?

civilian certs mean nothing. you would still have to attend ALL of AIT.

Huge difference in military combat medicine as opposed to civilian medicine - techniques, procedures, protocol, etc….
YOU will learn the military way, be warned that once the instructors know that you are EMT- qualified, under any circumstances, don’t FVCK UP!
YOU can use your health check knowledge to tutor & guide the younger soldiers!
If you are an NREMT, then you will take the rest of the 68W course. The EMT-B part is at the beginning, so you’ll just skip to the rest of the course, avoiding the first six weeks.
Quick side note: 68w is medic. A combat medic is a medic that’s earned his cmb. No biggie now, but when u get to your unit dont refer to yourself as a combat medic, otherwise some medic that really is one will make ur life hell.
Anyway, if u get your nremt-b then u can skip the first few weeks of medic teach because that’s all they focus on
68W is a healthcare specialist. Medic is one of the duties a healthcare specialist is assigned to. Combat medic is an award.
MP vet’s right… you basically get to skip the first half of AIT.
I have told the tale of belly wound first aid training in Vital (The Army does not have “boot camp”).
This trainer is showing us how to use a bandoleer to tie around a guys waist and hold his insides in house. he goes into a tale in this area guys urinating on others guy’s insides in the field to clean them as they reckon urine is sterile, guess it happened in Viet Nam, he had been back less than a year. Any how he goes on in this area how 12 inches of intestine is removed for each 1 contaminated. He does a long stare around the room at everyone and says not to do it AND if we find him lying in the muck with his guts hanging out and we pee on him we had best hope he dies cuz if he lives we are dead MF’s.
There are few types of human carnage they may not cover in a civilian class!

my husband is an PLT SGT for 68W. and rairly it does happen that someone shows up and is already qualified. which is excellent. there is like a 30% drop out rate due to that test.
you still have to go threw all the training. but since EMT test is certified in the civilian planet as well as the military and by the same people. then you are excellent. and since you already have the training the PLT SGT’s might use you for other details or duty’s that come up. knowing that pulling you away from class shouldn’t hurt you.
also you have to e-certify every so often. so in that case, you take the refresher test. but there is other thing above and beyond EMT.
