Q&A: I am former military and thinking about attending Devy university. Please help!?
Question by Mike: I am former military and thinking in this area attending Devy university. Please help!?
I just was honorably discharged from the Navy in December. I was an Network Administrator (IT) for 4 years. I started to pursue a degree in notebook science at a community college and want to transfer to a state college(SDSU). The counselors told me it would take 4-5 years to graduate and they would not accept any of my military credits. My GI Bill only pays for 36 months of tuition. Devry told me i can take accelerated courses, that i can graduate in 3 yrs, and they would accept my military credits. Also they have more degrees focusing on Information Technology which fixed colleges are severely lacking in. So what I want to know is if Devry is worth it or should I just go through fixed college like everyone else? Thankfulness for your time!

DeVry is a fantastic college. The reason you can get a degree in 3 years is due to no summer break.

DeVry is a division of ITT Tech, which is noted as a “degree mill”. That being said, there are plenty of schools that offer IT degrees that will be able to be completed within the 36 month window for the GI Bill. The best resource to look at is NavyCollege.Navy.mil. It will give you a list of programs that work with the Navy for certain degrees, and pretty much all of these give some sort of credit for Navy training (you should be able to access your SMART transcript, if not, you can probably work with the admissions personnel). Plus, these institutions are regionally qualified, a marker that looks a lot better than the national (vocational) certification.
1. 36 months of GI bill benefits equals 4 years or 8 semesters of college.
2. DeVry degrees are NOT looked at like degrees from fixed universities.
3. There are numerous class action law suits currently in the courts, against DeVry.
4. Id go look at a real university.
