Not required, but it's recommended. Colleges would prefer someone who slugged through the work in AP classes even though they got B's over someone who got perfect 100's in regular classes.

Not necessarily. I only took a couple AP classes and I was still top 10% which meant I could get into any college (in Texas). I had friends who took some AP’s and it screwed there GPA, while I took the easier Honors class and ended up with a higher GPA because of that. Plus a lot of people didn’t even take the AP final test for the college credit or didn’t pass it, so it was just a waste of time for them.

AP courses look good, but their main purpose is to give students college credit in high school. A 3.6 gpa with no AP classes will get you into a better college than a 3.0 with several AP classes. So, to answer your question, no. You don’t need AP courses for anything =D

  3. L K says:

AP courses are good, but they would rather see you do good in an honors level class that see you struggle in an AP. However, your test scores look good, so as long as you have extra curric.’s you’ll be fine :]

You don’t have to take AP courses. IB courses are another option. That said, you really do HAVE to take one or the other or a combination of both to get into good colleges, especially NYU.

Yeah, if you want to go to NYU, you should take rigorous courses during high school. Those include honors and AP/IB.

You’re probably not going to get into NYU if you don’t take any more AP courses. Honors classes aren’t cutting it anymore nowadays.

So my advice for NYU: Take AP courses (Why can’t you take them anymore?) and raise your ACT score and GPA.

Of course, taking AP classes in high school is only an advantage if you do well in them and pass the exams in May. Many people don’t, which is why colleges are impressed when they encounter an applicant who does.

If you can’t get A’s and B’s in AP classes, then you should switch to honors. (I’m just saying that NYU would probably not accept you if you take all honors without a few APs)

AP courses are strongly recommended, plus it prepares you for the rigor of college curriculum. If anything, if you work hard now college will be easier when the time comes because you’ve spent time reviewing the material beforehand.

I took one AP class sophomore year, two junior year, and seven senior year. Of course, throughout my freshman, sophomore, and junior years the classes that were not actually AP were Pre-AP or honors.

Take as many as you can, it will help you later on and can definitely save you money by placing out of college courses by taking a $ 56 exam. It also shows college you can handle and pass their material.
