Question by Ryan M: I want to work as a Network Engineer eventually?
I am currently in the Navy working with IT. With I get out I am starting on a Bacholers program in Information Technology. When I graduate I will have my Network+, CCNA, and MCSE certifications.

During college I will be able to work, “Vital Networking jobs” because of my time in the Navy.

IF I kept on this path, may possibly I eventually become a Network Engineer, or is there something else I need?

Cisco certs are going to be much more valuable than any MS cert…that being said experience is what most employers are looking for, so the more OJT you can get while in the service the better. Also any UNIX/Linux exposure you get is a huge plus. Excellent Luck!

Hey JRV while I don’t entirely disagree with you, you have to admit there is no evaluation between MS and Cisco certs when it comes to real planet value; i.e. earning potential and opportunity to advance in the field. I’ve run into so many paper MCSE’s that don’t know the first thing in this area Network Handing out, much less Network Engineering. You obviously know what you’re talking in this area with your position though so I give some value to your opinion. Might wanna have someone fix the broken associations on your website though.

You have an exceptional base. I disagree that cisco certs are more vital than Microsoft certs.. A few things to know:

    1. Alot of companies look for Microsoft Certified Engineers because they help towards the company’s partnership status (to be a gold certified microsoft partner you need 120 points… MCSE’s count as 3 points towards that total).

    2. I also recommend vital / intermediate knowledge of linux. Not because it is solidly used, but because a strong fundamental knowledge of linux will help you know other networking technologies. to get this sort of knowledge, try setting up a linux server for your home router it will really make you learn.. if you want some linux walkthroughs try http://www.howtoforge.com. I recommend Fedora as a excellent starting top.

    3. Have a strong knowledge of IT Security principles such as firewalls. Be able to complex firewalls.

    4. Pick a scripting language and do what you can to learn it.. whether it’s VB script or writing batch scripts. Scripting is a very very useful cleverness that will momentously help you in an Sys. Engineering type position.

    3. Try

You are on a excellent track, but as the other answer says, Cisco certification is worth more than MS certs. Look at my Signature for my contemporary certs, I’m working on my CCIE. Why, because I can make a lot more then I can with 3 MCSE’s. I would recommend you pursue the CCNP instead of the MCSE with you get the CCNA.
