Q&A: better to start college or training?

Question by Amanda: better to start college or training?
Right now I’m really leaning towards being an EMT but I don’t know if I’d like it. Would it be smarter to start EMT training and then quit and enroll in college if i don’t like it? or would it be better to start college and if i don’t like that then to take up EMT training?

If I were you, I’d do the EMT training first. In fact, EMT training can take the form of an associate’s degree. Try to make sure that as much as possible is through an qualified community college or college. If things don’t work out with being an EMT, you can possibly apply the credits you earned as electives or otherwise towards a degree. Just make sure you are getting some college credit for your EMT training. That way, nothing is lost if being an EMT doesn’t work out.
For example, here are the requirements for an AAS in Urgent situation Health check Services at my community college:

Note that certain classes like English 111, SDV 101, etc. are all applicable to other degrees as well. The EMT courses are all worth college credit, so they can be counted as electives towards a further degree down the road.
I reckon you may possibly probably train to be an EMT for at least a year and have nearly all the credits also be applicable towards a further type of degree if you change your mind.
