Question by Eric: What is the difference between a certification, associates, and bachelors degree?
Title says it all. what makes a certification, associates, and bachelors degree different from each other? is it credits earned? credits in related fields? I am currently enrolled in a Radiologic Technologist certification program at a local community college, and i hear people discussing salary earning between rad techs with a certification, associates, or bachelors. I don't understand how there can be a difference between the levels of degrees in this field.

Certification = classes in a particular area but not enough classes to get a degree; more like specialized training in a particular subject
Associates = 2 year college degree
Bachelors = 4 year college degree
Masters = bachelors + 2-3 years
PhD = bachelors + masters + 2-6 years

  1. Sally says:

    A certificate is what you receive with specialized training in a particular field.

    An Associate Degree is two years of college.

    A Bachelor’s Degree is four years of college.

    A Master’s Degree is beyond the four years of college and is sometimes another two year program but it depends.

    For rad techs, there is no difference in pay between someone who got a certificate from a hospital and someone who got a degree. A tech is a tech. Hospital certificates and college associates are both 2 years. A bachelors is only necessary if you want to go into management or teaching.
