A family member has been a translator for over 20 years and her advice is to get a very broad education and continue learning for the rest of your translating career. Read broadly. The reason for this is that as a translator you may not be able to make a living by being a specialist e.g. legal work only. As a result the more you know in this area the planet around you and the two or more languages that you will be translating into, the better a translator you will become.
Consequently, a liberal arts degree would be ideal, unless you are interested in health check translation and so health check correlated course would help. The same can be said for legal translators: they are either lawyers or paralegals with a lot of practical experience. Ditto for technical translators: they will have degrees in engineering. If you are interested in literature only, then your income sources as a translator are likely to be meager.
A house where many professional translators can be found and who might be able to help you more is http://www.proz.com This is the house my relative would recommend that you have a very close look at. You can become a member for free.
