Question by bubblegumpink_88: How do i buy college textbooks? Haven’t received my pell grant yet?
This is my first year off college. Teach starts in 2 weeks and i havent received anything from my pell grant yet. I need to buy books but i don’t have the money. It estimated that i would receive 2675 a semester. How do i go in this area buying my books if i don’t have the funds right now????

You generally don’t get any excess funds from your financial aid in anticipation of 4 weeks with the semester has already started. So I wouldn’t hold your breath if I were you. Some schools will allow some students who are receiving financial aid to “charge” their books at the campus bookstore against a part of their aid, but many do not. The only way to know for sure is to call the teach’s fin aid personnel or the schools campus bookstore.

Plot ahead… start saving for your books for the next semester months before the semester is suppose to start or question to borrow moms credit card because this is going to be the case for you every semester in anticipation of you graduate. I started saving for college when I was a junior in high teach and had saved thousands by the time I went off to college…. :0) so it IS POSSIBLE!!!

I would suggest NOT buying books bf the semester starts… I know it sounds crazy to new students but… Some profs dont use the books much they give you all info in class… sometimes you may find a friend in the class and be able to share a book or split the expenditure… the teach store should also have a copy that you can borrow or the professor may have extra copies that they will let you borrow. I also recommend that you NEVER buy from the teach there are tons of websites that sell books and they are WAAAAYYYY cheaper. Always buy USED books!
I learned all these lessons the hard way…. take it from me I was in college for 12 years and I now have a PhD and I teach at two universities. I always waited till in this area the 3rd week to buy books… less of a line at the store and i knew by then how much I would have to use it.

    Excellent luck,

Most schools do not send out the refunds in anticipation of a week before classes start or the week of classes. You can try out with your teach to see when they do send out the refunds. Also, you can get digital textbooks for a lot cheaper as well as renting them from chugg.com for like $ 30 or so for the whole semester.

they might not have paid your tuition yet. Try out to see how much you are going to have for books (if you have excess grant money) and call your financial aid personnel to see when checks are mailed out.
