Question by tainted.orchid: confused in this area university courses?
im finishing highschool this year and for a long time i thought i wanted to be a dance instructor as im very passionate in this area that area, but, realistically the industry is too competitive to take it on as a full time career.

its not long in anticipation of university application time and i’ve hit a slump where i don’t know what i want to do, i’ve read alot in this area the courses from many universities but none interest me. I really don’t know what career i should deliberate. I did deliberate commerce/marketing but i dont meet the prerequisites…

my main areas of interest are: dancing, health & beauty, travel, languages, writing and others.

My personality: strong leadership personality, patient, excellent at teaching, very independant, driven, social, bubbly and motivated.

- i have no intention of being a instructor unless for dance.

can anyone give me advice for university courses to study? or career options which may suit me?
Im really stuck and dont know what to do….
any suggestions really appreciated!
- one aspiration i sort of have is to be a beauty/health editor for a major magazine, im really competitive so id work hard… im just unsure.

the areas that interest me arnt necessarily what i want as a release career, they’re just interests.
+ the dancing ive chose will remain a leisure activity

you can always be a dance instructor at a local dance teach. all you need to have is a plot to fall back on. one of my friends is currently a sophomore majoring in english and minoring in dancing. she teaches dance at a small dance teach in the middle of nowhere, Wisconsin and maybe you may possibly do that too!
otherwise, i would recommend you look into international business since you said you liked foreign languages and traveling.

None of your main areas of interest have a likelihood of ever being profitable.

    1. dancing= not profitable
    2. health & beauty= most people in this field are lucky to make minimum wage/ read federal guidelines in this area lack of progression and low barrier to entry.
    3. travel= unless your parents are rich and can afford you to live off of them for 10+ years while you build a resume for frommers or ntnl geo you better count this one out.
    4. languages= my parents gardener speaks spanish, french, portuguese, and english, he is not well paid i would assume.
5, writing= unless you get a degree in technical writing you are nearly guaranteed to never earn a dollar writing/ and forget journalism you are 20 years too late and all the papers are going out of business.

It honestly sounds like you have everything it takes (by reading what you listed in this area your personality) to have a fantastic career in the business planet. A degree in management, or even in sociology or human assets may possibly benefit in this area.

the truth is that the average person changes their major 3 times in college, there is no rush. I just despise it when people graduate with a degree in something that seemed fun to study or that was lucrative 20 years ago comes to me and questions me to help them find a job.

The sky’s the limit to what you can do! I’d suggest maybe meeting with a guidance counselor or instructor to discuss your fears and concerns. It seems you have already done this somewhat, but perhaps taking career inventory tests or visiting career placement sites as well can help.

Have you visited any colleges yet? Have you started applying? As you indicate that you’re college bound, I’d suggest focusing on finding a teach that you delight in and is ranked vastly in its education as well as in areas that you are interested in pursuing. A fantastic deal of people go into college not knowing what on planet they’ll be responsibility(I reckon the largest major is often undecided). In the first couple of years you have a opportunity to take general education courses and find new things that may interest you as well as learn more in this area things you’re already interested in. Most collleges also offer career advising to help you choose what sort of things you want to do as well as preparing you professionally.

I’d suggest to talk to advisors, teachers, counselors. Search on what you’d like to do, but also keep in mind finding an institution you can excel at. You’ll have time to find what is excellent for you and to make more choices if you attend a university or start at a community college first. You may even go to teach for a few years then realize you want to try something that takes advanced education (like realizing law or being a professor are for you).

I may possibly summarize some tales I know of for myself and others to let you become more aware of how discovery in college often takes house:

I went to teach for three years responsibility something I really wanted to do, but did not have the skills or personality for in the least. In fact, I truly wanted to be a language arts instructor but may possibly not even make eye friend or talk in front of a classroom. Then I realized it wasn’t something I may possibly be responsibility and chose to change my major to austere English/literature. This opened the doors to some other careers in education and I also went back to teach to study store science(am currently looking for work in this area but responsibility a lot of reading/writing correlated work in the meantime).

Many friends just went to college for liberal arts major, including english, writing, history, etc. Some I know went on to graduate teach in law, social work, or even dentistry. One friend I know is serving in Africa for the peacecorps.

There’s also the case that many people with associates’ degrees make far more money than I will anytime soon with a graduate degree. It really depends on the field and the expertise/skills of the party.

Keep in mind as well that most people change their careers several times over the course of their working lives!

selecting a career is really a huge mix-up. i had this problem too. i am now an HR professional. In fact i had no thought in this area HR(Human Resource Management) when i started my course so i had start from the foundation. Management is a excellent career. you can specialize if you want or just study the General management.

Why i am suggesting you to follow HR courses is, you have mentioned in your question in this area your personality. all those suites for this career very well. i bet you would make a excellent HR professional too. it’s fascinating too, since you have to deal with people and you have to study in this area them. And also you can have dancing as your main leisure activity or something….
