Question by Nathan: Can the Army force me to take college courses?
I am currently serving in the United States Army. My supervisor wants me to take college courses, but I am not interested. I am more interested in getting my notebook certifications so I can continue to be a notebook tech in the civilian planet. Can the Army force me to take college courses against my will?

Nope. But, from private experience your notebook certifications will be worth just so jack shit when you get out. The college credits will be there forever.

What do you reckon? Answer below!

It depends on if it is required for your MOS. If it is, then yes, they can require you to take them to maintain the MOS. Even if it is not required it will probably with a denial affect your annual fitness reports if your supervisor wants you to take technical courses and you refuse. Compliance with authority is a huge part of the military. If you refuse to comply you may be on your way to being coded RE4.

No he can not. But if an NCO or Unit Commander (I don’t know what a ‘supervisor’ in the Army is.) Wants you to take college courses I would do it. Mainly if he is an Officer. He is clearly trying to groom you to go ‘green to gold’ which is from enlisted to commissioned. Meaning better opportunity. Less bullshit and more freedom in your everyday life and duties. As an officer you will be in charge, and won’t have to deal with the BS of an NCO having a terrible day. You will be the one giving NCO’s terrible days. If you are already an Officer. I’d tell him to screw off. But if someone has taken an interest in you going to college and you are enlisted, they will obviously offer a fantastic recommendation and dual requests for stationing at their unit probably. You’ll be in charge, making a lot more money than in the civilian word. You would be a fool to pass up this opportunity. It’s rare a person ranking over you tries to MAKE you go green to gold. You obviously show talent and dedication. Don’t let this pass you by you’ll be sitting jobless and mad in the civilian planet if you do.

No! But it will affect your performance report.

Under law the army can “force” you to do many thing…such as the time you get up, the uniform you wear, the length of your hair, etc. But they can only encourage you to take college courses…to better your education and yourself.

I was lucky, the army sent me to graduate teach and when I left the service I used the (ancient) GI Bill to get my MBA too.
