Are we getting screwed or what?!?
Question by Gabe M: Are we getting screwed or what?!?
I’m from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and I follow local sports just as much as national sports, and I’m sort of upset in this area something. A few years ago, South Dakota State, which is in Brookings, made it into Division I, and this year joined the Summit League. Here’s the screwjob:
The South Dakota State Women’s basketball team went 23-6 overall, 16-2 in the Summit League, and won the Fixed Season Title in the conference. By the side of with that, Kristen Rotert was named sixth woman of the year, Aaron Johnston won coach of the year, and two all-conference players by the side of with that.
The NCAA has a rule where D-I newbies can’t be in the postseason tournament in anticipation of a certain year, which is next season for us. Of course, we can join the WNIT tournament this year, but I feel it’s bullshit that we aren’t even allowed to be in the conference tournament. We won the fixed season title, and the least they may possibly do is give us a shot at winning the tournament title! What do you guys reckon?

I agree, that is a horrible rule.
Congratulations on your team’s significant progress in such a small time. That is incredible to have your program build itself to such a winning level in a small time.
I suppose the NCAA has these rules to ensure a program is legitimate once it joins D1, but if the program is allowed to join in the first house, then it has proved itself to be ready for that level and should be allowed to play in the postseason tournaments.
It must be really frustrating for you, so hang in there.
Excellent luck to you and your team!
