Question by : This is frelling annoying. Trying to pick a college?
So I’m about to get my GED and have started looking into to colleges. I know what I want to get into, Game design or more to the point, game programming.
I’ve found two schools in my area that I’m interested in:

College: Rasmussen | Program: Game and Simulation Programming

http://www.rasmussen.edu/degrees/technology-design/game-design/

College: ITT-Tech | Program: Digital Entertainment and Game Design

http://itt-tech.edu/campus/courses.cfm?prog_id=2272

My problem is two:
NUMBER 1 ISSUE: I need a place, one is 30mins away the other is an hour. I’m living with my parents and need out. Neither college has dorms, so I need housing. Will Financial Aid help me out to pay for an apartment nearby as well as the college itself?

Issue number 2: Are these places any good!? Everywhere I look the comments on them are either seemingly programmed to give them good comments or are nerd rages from drops outs so its impossible to tell if the school sucks or the student themselves couldn’t handle it.

Please someone help me out here, I have no clue what I am doing and no one I can ask for help from. Some gimme some guidance!

(Note: Frelling is a reference from a favorite TV show of mine, Farscape. If you were wondering.)

Don’t go to either. I’m neither a nerd rager or a drop out nor am I automated. You should look for a publicly accredited college within your curriculum that also has student housing. Although both these schools are accredited neither has accreditation in what one might consider a good accrediting body. http://www.acics.org/uploadedFiles/Publications/7_20_09.pdf

Many of the schools that are accredited along with ITT are for profit schools. And several are being investigated in several states http://kyhousedems.com/2011/06/14/committee-chairman-dennis-keene-hold-hearing-on-for-profit-colleges/

Here’s an example of problems with for profit colleges http://www.gao.gov/products/GAO-10-948T

This happened at ITT 7 years ago http://www.crn.com/news/channel-programs/18831505/itts-ceo-expects-lengthy-federal-investigation-stock-slips.htm;jsessionid=YKvfg2j-a1Ml-h+pXalbjQ**.ecappj03 and I don’t think they changed much

As for Rasmussen there have been numerous complaints I think the key for you there is to watch out for traps like this guys

I think the best review you can find for rasmussen is not their students but among their staff

They all seem to hate it and play up the fact it is a business not a school. You will most likely be better and cheaper served at a state university that offers similar programming. For instance if you were in Indiana: Purdue University. Accreditation at this college is also top notch as they are a firm part of North central Accreditation.

If you were in Minnesota I’d say look at http://ugrad.cs.umn.edu/node/276 University of Minnesota I’ve provided a site for their yearly design competition.
