Question by Erin: How do I become an ESL instructor?
I have a Bachelor‘s Degree in Communications from Illinois State (wish I took a further send, but oh well) and I really would like to be an ESL instructor. I took Spanish and Arabic classes in college and want to take more and incorporate that with my like for teaching children. I looked online and all I can find are online college programs for ESL certification. I would rather go to an actual campus than take online classes. Does anyone know how long it takes to be certified? How in this area the steps it takes to become an ESL instructor in Illinois or America. Thankfulness so much!

The degree you have is fine for teaching English. As you say, you’ll also need a TEFL certificate. This can be taken either in-house or online at your own pace which is a much cheaper option. For a first entry level job nearly any certificate will do. You may be able to find a local ESL teach which also offers the cert and if you are close to a university they may also do it.
For teaching specifically in Illinois in the public sector you should friend your local education authority and they will tell you. For a private teach it usually requires a lot less in terms of qualifications.
You may well find, but, that it’s simpler to find work overseas and this might be something to look into; you go abroad for a few years and get some excellent experience which helps get a better job when you return home.
In order to become an ESL instructor one requires a professional ESL certification.
