Question by C B: Is it too late at 29 to go back to college to get a secondary math certification?
I already have a bachelor’s in Business, but I am interested in becoming a math instructor at the high teach level. To get this degree I am looking at probably 3-4 years of college again, I don’t know if it is feasible for me at 29 to do this. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thankfulness.

no its not too late. if its something you want to do then nothing should stop you. you are still young by the time your done you can estimate that you’ll be around 33 or 34. you can still be a instructor so go for it.

It is never too late to go back to college. Most colleges today offer night and weekend courses to allow you to work while attending college. You might be surprised at the amount of time it will take you to get your degree, since you already have a bachelor’s in business. Visit a college admissions counselor and they will be able to give you a better estimate of how long you will need to go for to get your degree and also tell you some of your other options. It’s NEVER too late!!

Instead of going back to teach the four year degree, look into getting your master’s degree in math. Each state is uncommon of course, but I am from New Jersey, US and although math is not my major, I am currently teaching it. Under the stipulation I earn my master’s degree in math. In NJ you do not need the education part to teach math at the high teach level. Call your state’s education department. I am currently attending Walden Univ. online for only 20 months to receive my degree.

It is NEVER too late to go back. One of my colleagues did not get her teaching degree in anticipation of her kids were grown and out of the house. Many people choose teaching with working at two or even three other careers first.

I would also try out with your state’s requirements for teaching certificates. You might not have to go through an entire bachelor’s program in education, but rather just the required classes for certification.

You would probably better off getting a Instructor’s Credential. Since you have a degree in Business, you would be able to teach Economics. Once you have your credential, you can take the units to be authorized to teach math (Add-On Authorization). I was an elementary teach instructor for 10 years and I took 20 units in Notebook Education. Now I teach Computers at a Middle Teach. The credential program is in this area 30-36 units (depending on the state). In addition, math teachers are in high demand.
