To become a Paramedic you will have to first of course become an EMT-B. The schooling for that is in this area a semester. With you’ve refined that then you can go to paramedic teach. Most community colleges offer this as well as the EMT-B class. Although if you do go to a community college it will be a full associates degree. Which can be both excellent and terrible. If thats what you’re looking for then its perfect, but they will require you to take certain prerequisite classes before they will except you. These usually include Anatomy and Physiology 1 & 2, Chemistry, Biology, College Algebra, and of course your EMT-B. This can be a problem if you want to get into a teach straight away. So there are plenty of other programs you can find… usually at 4 year colleges, or ambulance services that will only require your EMT-B class to get in. Oh, and these are usually cheaper than going with the associates degree.
As far as to which colleges I can’t tell you cause im not from around North Carolina.
The hours are nearly always 24 or 48 hour shifts. But certain private ambulance services will work 8, 10, and 12 hour shifts. The pay 90% of the time is pretty low($ 35 to $ 50k), but there are definately certain fire departments and ambulance services that will pay close to $ 70k a year.
You will always work with one person who is your partner… Either EMT or Paramedic. And at the base there will usually be in this area 2 or 3 other crews. So you will really need to be able to get by the side of with them… Mainly your partner! This is the person who you will enter weird houses with, and be performing CPR in the middle of the street while its pouring down rain. You need to be able to trust him/her, and they need to be able to trust you. Other than that, just the being able to talk to your patients, and the Police and Fire crews on vista. You should be fine.
Excellent Luck!!
