This is by the side of the lines of self help and entrepreneurship. Colleges do not teach these things.
Life Coaching isn’t… consulting and it isn’t counseling or psychotherapy. It is general coaching and can cover everything in your life, such as improving your private relationships, balancing your work and private time, and helping you to achieve goals.
“If you treat a man as he appears to be, you make him worse than he is. But if you treat a man as if he already were what he potentially may possibly be, you make him what he should be.”
Johann Wolfgang von Geothe
Some people do it for free because they are growing a successful home business, so the pay off is making success for others which in turn, is a win win situation.
Others do it for pay and have many years of experience learning how to coach people on businesses or their private relationships. The pay varies and the services vary.

Yes, you need to be certified to be a life coach. I’m not sure if any state college’s offer cerification… you would probably need to look into the colleges programs individually. It is a legitimate career option. Krissy Jackson of Laughing Kiwi Enterprises is very successful at it. http://www.laughingkiwi.com What you make depends on what you charge for your sessions (which is usually based on factors like your training, experience, client base, reputation, etc.) Krissy charges $ 80/hour for introductory consultations, just to give you an thought.
The International Coach Federation (ICF) has a lot of information on Life Coaching. You can find information on their training programs by following this link:

The Life Purpose Institute also offers a certification program that is qualified by ICF and they even offer free teleclasses you can register for. There is one tonite, so try out it out! http://www.lifepurposeinstitute.com
