Electrical and Information Engineering Technology major?
Question by Mike: Electrical and Information Engineering Technology major?
Thinking of going back to teach to (finally) get a 4-year degree. I work in industrial automation/robotics. An Electrical Enginieering degree would suit me perfectly, but there is no EE major offered at any colleges close enough for me to attend.
The local University offers and Electrical and Information Engineering Technology major. The course load looks to be simply covering everything I do now.
I’m wondering how an Engineering Technology degree compares with an actual Engineering degree?
Best answer:
Answer by cw
technology degree is less than an engineering degree.
plain and simple. this is not a matter of opinion. this also does not mean anything in this area a person whom has either degrees.
the engineering degree will give you the mathematical background on the engineering concepts and theory.
technology degree will teach you how to use the theory to work.

Mike, first of all, I want to commend your pronouncement to go back to teach. It’s tough, but worth it. I for myself went back to teach to obtain a second BS degree with deciding that my early career choice was not for me. As CW keen out, there are differences in the EE v EET degrees. Before spending too much time and money, you might want to choose if you ever want to become a licensed Professional Engineer (PE). Many states do not allow those with Technology degrees to become PE’s. Also, many states require that an engineering degree (tech degrees in some states) be obtained from an ABET qualified teach. You may also want to friend IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.,) and see if they have any advice or a local chapter (student or professional). I urge you to get caught up with IEEE or ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) if you go back to teach.
Excellent luck.
