Question by Trent Remme: Notebook programmer? what’s it take?
I am currently going to a community college for IT (Information Technology) certification but they also teach Java and other languages, is that enough to have a career in that field or what other classes/courses will I need?

Usually they teach programming through theory. It is very frustrating because most people learn well by the hands on approach or through making a program step by step then alternative it apart as you go. But, this insane way where they do not give you anything but “theory” then expect you to figure it out is dumb as a box of rocks!
Try going to the Sun Java forums and asking a java question, or just have a look around there… see all the arrogant programmers mock and berate the newbies who are trying to get a small help for their programming assignments. It’s the WRONG WAY to teach programming through theory…. the best way is reverse engineering with making a program step by step so you can see it work and how it’s made….

But yes, you need to know how a program works, how it is divided up, and the flow of the logic. I say give the answer to how to make the program, then test the students on how it works.

For many places, including most larger companies, you’d need a 4 year degree to get hired as a programmer.
