Question by : After I graduate college, what type of specialized computer training pays 6 figures over time?
I’m going to graduate college next semester in criminal justice although I really don’t want a job in that field but haven’t ruled it out.

From your experience what type of specialized training courses can I pay for and after completion which courses offer great job earnings and openings?

I know when my step-dad started out he did a lot of SAP and bank coding crap, now that he has 25+ years experience he gets jobs working from home making 150k plus.

What type of training do I need to be able to have this earning potential over time? I’m will to dedicate myself and I assume I’ll need to learn some obscure programs to make my knowledge valuable and will not have a lot of competition?

I think the first point is you have to be good at it. There are people who make 6 figures in nuclear physics … but I sure as heck couldn’t do it, and if I could, wouldn’t be good at it.

Just like developers. I know developers who make 6 figures in their thirties. However, I know a lot of developers in their thirties who don’t make 6 figures, and they never will. They’re not that good at it.

So, my answer is ‘developer’ … but you should be good at it. It doesn’t even have to be in an obscure language … could be C#, C++, PHP, etc.

There is no real easy answer for this. If only we could predict what the future holds…
In hindsight, back in the 90′s the craze was to get A+ certification & MCSE and some other BS certificates..then the bubble burst and jobs became harder to find - the certificates didn’t hold any value. The experience however did. You will also realize over time, making a boat load of money isn’t really the answer - it helps, but doesn’t solve everything.

Ask you step-dad. You might find out that he doesn’t like what he does. Also since he’s in the tech field, he could guide you in the right direction.

Coding for banks & hedgefunds still pay 6 figures if you’ve got the experience.
Six Sigma is the new certification buzz - but again, if you don’t have the experience, it doesn’t really pay just because you have the certificate. A lot of folks just have the cert.
Integration type of jobs for Seibel, SAP, Salesforce and other apps that become the new big thing will hold some value over a 5 year period. Then something else will come out and you’ll have to learn new technology to be able to keep up.

Don’t jump into TCI, DeVRY and these other BS vocational training courses. Most companies send you to specialized training courses on the job as needed.
