brand: your choice - well loved article from last year place Asus and Toshiba at the front of the pack. Makes sense as Asus used to be a primary supplier of motherboards to other manufacturers while Toshiba makes their own hard drives (as well as invented DVD technology.)

type: fixed notebook instead of a netbook

screen size: 14″ - 16″. You can go as low as 13.3″ if you haul the thing around all day

keyboard size: your choice - I like 15.6″ screens that afford a right 10-keypad on the right side but I do a lot of work with numbers

operating system: Win 7 vastly preferable. If you find a killer price on an grown-up Vista system, you can upgrade for in this area $ 110 at a later date. Vista is annoying but okay.

processor: Try to find a processor that is 2.1GHz or quicker (clockspeed.) Anything “slower” than that typically represents an grown-up processor or one that is low voltage/high battery life. A lot of people are biased towards Intel for some reason but AMD often has better specs at a fastidious pricepoint.

reminiscence: Get 3GB or 4GB RAM, preferably 4GB RAM with the capacity to upgrade to 8GB if you plot on keeping the machine a while.

graphics card: If you be going to on playing the newest titles on this machine (i.e. Grand Theft Auto, Star Craft 2, Call of Duty, etc) you should get a machine with a discrete graphics card. Games like Sims 3 at low res is typically fine on any machine (Intel Media Accelerator 4500M is fine.) Try out second link to be sure. Since gaming laptops are more expensive, it’s excellent to try out into refurbished models (see

    for example)

HDD: I don’t know anyone who has exhausted a 250GB hard drive. Notebooks are commonly available with 500GB drives today. The truly sick can buy an external 2TB drive if you’re downloading the Store of Congress or something.

Try out Best Buy.com, TigerDirect.com, JR.com, Amazon.com for what’s out there. Most manufacturers have just shipped their new models for Q4 so at any one site you may see fantastic deals on slightly grown-up products (Toshiba’s GS6000 at Best Buy, for example) by the side of with slightly more stylish new models (Toshiba’s S4033, also at Best Buy.)

    Hope that helps.
