I am not sure how to try out out the online college to see if it is some kind of scam.

Many qualified universities are using e-learning.

In my opinion there are some courses that are suitable for this type of learning, but not every course. For example, Project Management is a course whose main focus is on interacting with people. In my opinion it is not well suited to be educated online.

Any institution you are taking into account should be regionally qualified. Regional accreditation is the same for online or onground courses.

You can try out for the teach here:

Do not go to the university website, their claims of accreditation can be fake or misrepresented. Verify in through the 3rd party. It should be qualified by one of the 6 regionals.

Try out out the teach’s website and see if they are qualified and by whom. There are 7 regional accrediting associations in the US, and if this teach is qualified by one of them, then it is as legit as Harvard or Yale. Nearly all colleges have some type of online courses or degrees available. Your stereo-typical image of the online schools simply being diploma mills is outdated.
