Can I still apply to colleges as an incoming freshman even though I have started taking college courses?
Question by Robyn: Can I still apply to colleges as an incoming freshman even though I have started taking college courses?
I recently started (Fall 2010) taking college courses at Glendale Community College. Is it still possible for me to apply to schools as a college freshman even though I’ve already started taking college courses? And if I still can, would I be able to keep the credits of the classes I’ve taken so far, or do I need to drop these courses? Thanks!!!

It depends…
Incoming freshman refers to people who started college with zero class credit. It depends on the number of class credit you earned up til applying for another school. I believe what you are trying to do is transfer all your existing credit to another school. Thus, you would be referred to as a Transfer Student, not incoming freshman. If you have below 30 hours, you are classified as freshman. 60 hours for Sophomore, 90 for Junior, and 120 for Senior. Therefore, you can still be a freshman transfer student if you transfer in with 15 credits. However, most people transfer in after a year so they will be entering as Sophomore. Typical transfer student are Junior because they finished their 2 years of Associate degree and apply for bachelor in another school.
In order to be a transfer student, you need at least 15 hours of credit from another school and must meet all incoming student requirements such as GPA level and prerequisite classes. Transfer student keep all their existing classes and grades from those classes.
Another way to enter in as an incoming freshman is to have all your existing college credit erase and start college all over from scratch. Why? Because some people want a fresh new start in life while others have really bad grades and need to start from the beginning.

yes, if you take a certain amount of credit hours i believe more than 30 then you apply as a “transfer” student. Depends on the school and what they consider freshman and transfer.
Yes, they will be counted toward your degree. I am assuming you are falling under “Dual Credit?”
